Can I put bendryl spray on my itchy dog?

I plan to take my dog to the vet because he has extremely dry skin that itches a lot. Lately he's been itching more and now he has a small open sore from scratching on his back. Would it be okay to spray the benadryl on the sore or will it hurt him. Need answers ASAP, thanks!

Can I put bendryl spray on my itchy dog?
Mine had the same problem. don't u dare. put any type of ointment with antibiotic if possible to prevent any infection, or better take it to the vet
Reply:DO not do anything like that unless you ask the vet if it is ok first. If it's not, the vet will suggest an alternative that will not hurt the dog.

PLEASE do not do this to the dog without consulting the vet first. I have a feeling the vet will say not to do it. Just call the vet's office and ask - they should be able to tell you over the phone.
Reply:Well its not he best thing because it will sting like crazy. You would be better off cleaning the raw area and drying it and putting some neosporin cream on it until you get him into the vets. He has gotten a hot spot now from scratching the area.
Reply:please dont, use a wet sponge or bath towel and bathe the area, do not apply benadryl without advice from the vet
Reply:Benadryl is an anti-histamine called diphenhydramine, which is often given for allergic reactions in dogs (breathing problems, for example). I've never heard of it being used topically in animals, though (I used to be a vet tech).

I don't think spraying it on will actually hurt him, but it's not going to help him much either. It might decrease some of the swelling, but then again you could introduce some contaminant into the sore.

Treating skin in animals usually is an oral thing, rather than a topical thing. As a totally non-professional person, I'd say don't bother with it. Hope this helps!
