Home remedy for cat's itchy scabby rash?

It is due to excessive cratching and licking at excessive area- located on belly and top of her back end near tail. Is there something to be added to food- or a pet lotion? Her skin is dryer than usual.





Looking for some kind of home style remedy ....on the cheap. Vet visit at this time is not an option for me.

You could pour some olive oil, or even oily Caesar salad dressing over her food (my cat's LOVE Caesar salads). It will help with dry skin. A raw egg a day is also good for the cat, if they will eat it. A saline bath in Epsom salt is soothing for the itch.


I am concerned about the underlying reason for the scratching. It could be nerves, or an allergy, or ringworm. Ringworm doesn't always look like a circle. You can use any over the counter anti-fungal creme at the drugstore and it will help, if its ringworm. It's all the same ingredient, myo-something. Get one that has no other ingredients, except the method of delivery, ie cream. If is allergies, you can use children's benadryl, but use a small dose based on the cat's weight, as directed by the benadryl package. For nerves, you can give a cat St. John's Wort, or Valerium. Use tuna or canned food and empty the capsules into the food and stir.


Don't use calamine lotion. Use pure lanolin, or glycerin for a lotion, or a combination of these two. Try the health food store and use natural, edible products. REAL mayonaisse is good in the food and on the sores, but the cat will probably just lick more, and you don't want that. .
Reply:Are you sure it is not a ringworm? If it is a ringworm you can use an OTC antifungal cream.
Reply:no beef or pork in cat food- could be a food allergy- just read the labels on the food bag





also cat vitamins that contain brewers yeast are good for cats skin





and if its a flea related get a vitamin that contains garlic(vitamins run about 6 dollars @ Wal-Mart) it makes fleas not like the taste of the blood- but it takes up to 6 wks to work so flea comb her every night





also they sell hydracortisone cream (10$) @ any pet shop that will help with the itching

It could be something like ringworm since you said it was a scrabby rash- she needs to see a vet because this will just spread and cause her more annoyance and pain. If a vet trip is not an option then you should not have a pet.
Reply:Sounds like flea allergy. You need to figure out a way to take your cat to the vet because this is incredibly painful and irritating for cats. Its similar to eczema in humans but it rarely just goes away. It is difficult to get rid of fleas but that is the first step. She may also need steroidal medication to overcome the allergy. You should not put lotion on your cat..she will simply lick it off and this may make her even more sick.
Reply:You could add fish oil to her diet. You can buy the stuff formulated for pets or even use human grade supplements.





But in addition I recommend determining the cause of the problem. A vet should be able to tell you whether the behavior (the scratching and licking) is caused by a food allergy or whether it's obsessive behavior. Once you find that out you can treat accordingly.





But the fish oil is a good thing to do in any case. My girls get a dose every day.
